Notes Client / Mail: Attachments placed in their own pane and not at the bottom of emails

Author: Karen Hooper
Tags: attachment attachments
Idea:

When you open an email, whether received internally or externally it would be great if all the attachment/s were positioned in a pane at the top of the email (I believe Outlook does this and DWA does it but puts at the bottom which I'm ok with). I am sick of scrolling to the bottom of long emails to find the attachments and sick of end users complaining to me about it.

Author: Michael Kinder
Comment: I too am with the "show them in both places" crowd. I think it should be configurable for top or bottom (some users might like it at the bottom). Though just at the top is fine - but in line attachments are great too!
Author: Bastian Wieczorek
Comment: I promote this idea... BUT I would have a "show them in both places" option...

reason... sometimes I send tables via Lotus Notes. And add a description in one column and the file in another column. If these attachments would be moved into another section from my mail I would lost this option.
Author: Morten Clausen
Comment: I'm all for having a list of attachments somewhere nice and visible but not at the cost of removing them from the flow of the document. This would destroy one of the strengths of Notes, the integrated document where comments can be made right next to the thing I want to comment. I like Kevins idea, especially if it's available to any application.
re: Attachments placed in their own pane and not at the bottom of emails

Author: Bill Malchisky
Comment: Attachments in-line are much better than in a header. I typically will add a table, put in the attachments, text so that everything flows properly, for the end user. This translates well both for NRPC and HTML mail.

For more complex mail, I will make a tabbed table with sub-tables and attachments inside each, with collapsed sections for the parent topic. Thus, a lot of data can be presented in an organized manner and have it easily readable, showing the viewer what they want to see when they need it. This would be quite challenging and inefficient when pulling attachments out of the message body.

Having stated this, attachments that just collect at the bottom of e-mails like rocks inside of a held pillow-case become worthless and annoying quite quickly.
Author: Kevin Pettitt
Comment: HUGE! This is a real winner. I'm with the "show them in both places" crowd. The mechanism for this might be something analogous to an embedded element, such that it could be placed anywhere on a form, and might even be configurable to show *all* doc attachments or just the unaffiliated ones as Ben describes. It should probably respect CSS for both browser and client (to the extent meeting that requirement is planned in a broad sense). Any attachment operations performed either inline or in this module would be reflected in the other.
Author: Ben Langhinrichs
Comment: If I could alter the suggestion slightly, I would request that the unaffiliated attachments (those not in a rich text field) could be put in a designated spot as part of the design. This would allow a mail template where they showed up as they do in Outlook. Since those attachments are already singled out to be put somewhere, it would be nice to say where.
Author: John Head
Comment: I do not want the attachments in their own pane ... I want them as part of the header pane. Make it configurable so I can use that in my own forms as well.

The big issue is that when I get email from a Notes user, they probably have attachments in place ... I do it all the time. So it needs to be smart enough to show them there as well. So this should be configurable.

But I vote yes because attachment handling needs work ... period.
