re: Make ideajam firewall friendly

Author: Roland Reddekop
Comment: @Matt White

I understand the challenge of programming for all the flavors of browsers and configs in the wild. Hats off to you and believe me I feel your pain. I'm pretty plain jane in my config: I just just mainstream browsers (IE7 and Firefox 3) to access gmail, facebook, myspace, domino web, and a plethora of other sites and I have yet to run into any other site where I need to disable my Symantec firewall before clicking on a button, so I imagine there is something very unique about the voting system on Idea Jam.

I would guess that the Symantec firewall I am using is one that would have one of the largest corporate distributions. And so, as you're commercializing Idea Jam and it will therefore deploy in corporate environments that could be very similar to ours, I would imagine you'll be needing to change the voting system eventually. Better to change it before it happens to a CEO of some prospective company and it ends up being a deal breaker. So this suggestion is moreless a friendly heads up and remember, "The customer is always right" even if they aren't :-)

Yours if the first experience we have heard regarding IdeaJam. IdeaJam is deployed in many companies and we have no reports regarding the Symantec firewall nor have we have heard of any regarding the public IdeaJam site.

So let's throw it out there (and I will post a blog entry about this) to see if anybody else is having the same experiences you are.

Again, your feedback is extremely valuable and we truly appreciate it.
Notes Client / Other: Make View Navigation consistent between standard Notes Views and Java Views

Author: Roland Reddekop
Tags: navigation
Idea:

To go to the beginning/end of a Notes View you used Ctrl+Home/End. For Java Views its just Home/End. Its a little frustrating to switch between two methods, especially for end-users who have no clue that Notes Views and Java Views are different.

re: Make View Navigation consistent between standard Notes Views and Java Views

Author: Bill Malchisky
Comment: Actually, in Notes, Home puts you to the beginning of the view -- horizontally; whereas End puts you to the end of the said row. Ctrl-Home puts you to the beginning of the view's top row and Ctrl-End to the view's bottom row.

Now, if the view lacks a horizontal scrollbar (or there is no other column off the screen {which includes a blank one}), then Home and End work as you described. For example, the Inbox in an ND8.0.x client, auto-resizes to avoid a horizontal scroll bar; this is a significant design enhancement as you'll always be able to see your data regardless of whether you have your side-panel expanded or not and folders.

So, it really depends on where one is, how well designed the application is, and what version of Notes they are using, as to the behavior here. It would seem that this is in-progress with the Eclipse based products.

Otherwise, a good suggestion as I completely support consistent design.
Notes Client / Other: More programmatic control over printing from Notes

Author: Roland Reddekop
Tags: printing
Idea:

I hate having to provide users with manual instructions on how to print landscape. This should be an option so the user can just click on print. Also, what about backend classes to print programmatically so that certain reports, maybe as PDF's can be produced via scheduled agents. I guess that's 2 ideas.

Notes Client / Core/Frameworks (Incl. sidebar, rich text editor): Prevent accidental closure of Notes home page

Author: Roland Reddekop
Tags: navigation home
Idea:

Since R5 the Home page was added to Notes (replacing the workspace) and many orgs deployed a corporate home page with news feeds and links to commonly used applications (often roles-based). Users are in the habit of pressing escape to close windows to get back to Home, but with 8, your home page now closes as well resulting in a temporary user "malfunction" until they find their way "Home" again.

Let's avoid this unnecessary disorientation by making the navigation of Notes 8 truly backward-compatibility with 5, 6, and 7. An Admin policy would be nice, but not required to control if the Home page is closeable or "pinned" open so you cannot close it with the escape key.

Notes Client / Other: Make any NSF the Home Page via Policies

Author: Roland Reddekop
Tags: navigation
Idea:

Make any Notes NSF and make it your "Notes Portal" via policies. Then you can use "hide-whens" and ACL roles to serve up the content that applies to each person's job. This will align Notes with the web-side of Domino where you just enter a URL into a server document to determine your initial landing page.

I was disappointed, after the hoopla about Quickr Entry (formerly coined Quickr Personal) to see that it does not support folders, which makes it pretty unfriendly to get new users to use it. Don't expect to see our users drag and dropping their files to Quckr en masse now. I think if Lotus wants to fight Sharepoint they need to up the ante a bit here.

re: Let Quickr Entry Use Folders

Author: Roland Reddekop
Comment: Bruce, screenshot uploaded. I made it the max size supported on Idea Jam (450px). A higher max size would be better though...idealy 600 px. Hope this helps.

Couple notes:

--In Firefox, if you move your mouse over the "twistee" looking thing to the left of the Time label, it highlights, but there is no code to change views. Its almost as if the designers were toying with the idea of having different filters over the view like "by folder, by tag", etc. but pulled it out, except for this mouseover remnant. In the Quickr forum someone confirmed that Quickr Entry is a flat view only (no folders or by category or by tag). The only filter available over this flat view is Time.

--If you drag a file folder to the upload target, it ignores all sub folders

--In the Explorer connector, when you are working with an Entry place, the function to create folders is not available. Dragging folders into the Explorer connector results in sub folders being ignored
