The big problem in reading MS office products in Symphony (or Open Office) is the font replacement. This is especially true when an unusual font was used in the original MS document. Reading MS Office documents is a fact of life; so this is crucial. Example; i opened up an Excel spreadsheet written on a Korean version of MS Office. It was in English, but when opened in Symphony the font was some strange gothic font. It opened fine in English MS Office Excel, even though it was written on a Korean machine. When an unknown font is encountered, there should be an option to map.
I have had this on all types: doc, xls and ppt. The Korean example is extreme; it often happens with vanilla English MS Office stuff.

I should add that I did a "select all" and then selected Arial. Not all of the entries changed to Arial! Some did, some did not. Fonts are THE major issue with MS Office items being opened in Symphony.

I've not used "Symphony". But I remember this proposed feature exists in some products (Photoshop I'm not sure).

The old privative MS Office formats (.doc; .xls; .ppt) are NOT a fact of life for me.
It's not crucial at all.
Efforts should be put in a better integration of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) [ISO/IEC 26300 standard file formats] with Lotus Notes/Domino; for example in the (easy, out of the box) import/export of documents and views. It should also be trivial to create reports (text documents or spreadsheets) in OpenDocument Format from our lotusscript and Java code.
