It would be great if I could send/receive email, SMS, IM, Tweets, MMS, voice mail and other written forms of communication right in my Lotus Notes client. Currently I have an email client, instant message client, blackberry, iphone, telephone and on and on... they all essentially send and receive various forms of written or voice communication.

If Lotus Notes could bring all these forms of communication into one client inside my inbox that would truly be amazing. Imagine being able to SMS or broadcasting a tweet right from your inbox.

This would surely restart a Lotus revolution!

Isn't that (partly) what project vulcan is all about?

PS. I believe the Idea space you selected is incorrect, since your idea is not about the Voting system of Idea Jam.

Great idea and I think it's pretty much already here. It's Unified Communications. It does exist to some degree already. Voice mail requires integrating your phone system with Lotus UC2. Sametime is already integrated and you can save chats into your email. For Twitter, linkedin, fb, there are plugins (I know, not the same as in the inbox). (This would be something like HootSuite) SMS can already be done from your inbox. Just send an email to the person's phone number @ their mobile carrier. For BlackBerry and iPhone, these are not inboxes, these are ways to see your inbox. for BB messenger, this is an isolated system within BB's network. For AIM, and other IM's there is Sametime Gateway which integrates them all into your Notes Sametime client.

Funny. As we attempt to move further away from the inbox, we keep coming back to it.

I believe this is what IBM plans to do. Google for IBM social inbox. I have seen some tweets from Ed Brill mentioning this, also there was some buzz on LS.

And not only that, but give it away free with every darn PC or Mac that's sold, and make it open source

Lotus had the opportunity to own the email space back in the mid nineties when the Notes email db could access any pop3 mail store, the way that M$ owned the browser space with IE

Let's take it back now

We all know M$ LookOut! and Excuse are horrible mail clients, let's give the world a good open source one
