The option to View a file attachment in Notes rather than Open or Edit it is great. Skip the overhead of loading the application and avoid the risk of malicious code in the file. This works so well, I would like to be able to use these viewers for files stored outside Notes as well. Currently if I want to view the contents of a file without risk, I will attach it to a mail message just so I can use the View option.
I would like to be able to right click on a file in Windows Explorer and then in the context menu, the 'Open With...' option would have 'Notes File Viewers' as one of the choices. This could probably be done with a feature similar to the connectors. Yes, it would be nice if Microsoft would fix the OS to do this. But once again Lotus already does it...within their software.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of "without risk". It wasn't that long ago, that we had a security warning about the internal Notes attachment viewer being susceptible to malware. The workaround was to disable it for several file types.
From time to time, I do use the Notes internal file viewer, when I find a file that I don't have an installed program to view. It's very convenient to use Notes for that too. Using the file viewer as multi-purpose file viewers, directly from the OS, is not ideal for me. There are several 3rd party file viewers out there, most of them probably better suited to the task.

Then we agree it's safer than opening in the native application. I have seen the 3rd party viewers. The down side is that involves adding more software to the computer. Notes is already there and already has all the code. The 3rd party viewers actually tend to be a bit more risky because they try harder to display all formatting and run code, so malicious code is a bigger threat.
