: search multiple databases

Currently, Lotus notes has search facility depending on a single database. i.e if you want to search the mail/content having a word, you would have to first open the database (nsf file) and then search. It would be good if we have a search enabled for all the databases you would have on your workspace/disk.

We do have some products who could do the search based on mail files. How ever, it would be good to incorporate this search in Lotus Notes itself.

That's been in the product for years. However, it's per-server, not per-database, and not available if you are using local replicas. You choose which databases on a server to include in the search, then you can search across all of them simultaneously. You can't search just a subset of databases simultaneously, though.

It would be good to have it for the end user. Lotus notes provides archive mechanisms and I generally categorise the mails and archive by creating rules. But many a times I have always felt that I need to search more than one achives, in such situations, I would have to know which archive I should search and then actually do the search

I had submitted this idea in lotu knows.. one of the comment is ...

"Thats a great idea... we have a knownledge Application, a Problem & Solution Application and a discussion forum (and my mailfile). It would be a great idea if I can search in all applications.

Select the application in the workplace and choose the option search from a menu would be great I think... Or give the user a dialogbox where they can build a list with applications where he wish to search in."

It frustrates me that Google can search through all the public Notes databases across the entire Internet and then provide a nice snappy search interface and yet I can't provide the exact same thing for a collection of my own internal Notes databases.

Once upon a time, I seem to recall being able to click several icons in the workspace and then perform a search against all of them at once. I think that was R5? There was even a multi-database search that transformed into the Domain Search feature.

I can say I need this back. I have a user who has..(sit down) a 29GB mail file and refuses to archive or split it into multiple databases until we can give her the ability to search all of them in ONE search. Do not bother me with the "user training" and "why does she need all that data?" Trust me, this is the business requirement and we have the need throughout our company.

@4 -- Is correct here. We just need the previous functionality to be returned.

Also, David, there are some good archiving tools that will allow you to search the archive and Notes mail simultaneously. Reasonably priced as well. Contact me for details (if still and issue).

This used to be possible in Domain Search (there was an 'include this database in a multi-database search' checkbox) and was removed in R6 I think
7) David Hablewitz13448 (21 Mar 2013)
Have you seen what they have in Notes 9?
8) Carl Tyler5326 (22 Mar 2013)
Agree with number @4, when IBM moved to their own internal search technology from the 3rd party search code Lotus was using, this functionality was lost. Would love it back.

But it was much easier to use than any domain search stuff, you just held down the Ctrl key to open multiple databases at once in a single window.
