Usability issue with desktop icons

The labels on the desktop icons on Windows XP get cut off, making it hard to tell the Symphony applications apart. This is compounded by icons that are of such muted colors they are hard to tell apart visually. When paired with the Notes 8 icons it's a wash of orange.

Charles,

Have you also noticed that some of the icons have halos and some don't?

I happen to like the "wash of orange" effect, but then we all know I have the graphic design skill of a block of ice. But I've had to rename the icons in every release since 5, because they've all disappeared, and it's certainly annoying. I'm not sure what they should do about it, though, because I can't imagine they can drop the word "Lotus" (which is what I always do). Maybe they just need shorter product names? IBM Lotus Documents ==> Lotus Symphony Documents ==> WordPro. heh...

Bruce, I hadn't noticed that, actually. At larger sizes it appears they all do have the halos, it just doesn't come across well in the smaller sizes.

Rob, it's interesting that you comment about having to rename the icons for Notes. These are as they come out of the box, and they don't wrap like the Symphony labels do.

I'm not sure what they can do about this, either. I threw it out there as a usability issue just so they're aware of it. Shorter names would help. The icons work well when they're larger, such as { Link } and { Link } . When they're shrunk down to 32x32 pixels, though, it's much less readable.

I also like the "wash of orange" at least for Notes, Designer and Admin. However, I do feel we need different colors for each Symphony document type as they are difficult to differentiate when you have many different documents in a folder (details view).

I prefer it as it is ... I never use the icons on the desk top and am ok with the links in the client
6) Craig Wiseman21176 (20 Nov 2007)
This is actually an excellent point. The new icons are cooler (when supersized), and I do like them, but the one thing that the R6 icons had was a noticable bit of unique color to each one.
I used to set my bookmark bar to 'small icons', and it made a world of difference.
Now I have my Open list set to "Doc the Open List" and have the same issue.
Now I just have to hover over 'em until they reveal which is which....
