Domino Server / Security: log deletions

Author: Bastian Wieczorek
Tags: domino database log delete deletion
Idea:

Sometimes my users delete a document in a DB and after that they couldn´t remember that they have deleted it. So I would have the option to see which person deleted a document. Maybe in the DB Access log or somewhere else.

Domino Designer / : Option: Delete Responses automatically

Author: Harkpabst Meliantrop
Tags: documents deletion hierarchy
Idea:

A current posting on the Notes.net forum made me think: Wouldn't it be helpful (and not only to beginners) to have a (database or even better form) option to delete responses automatically, whenever a main document is deleted? In 99,999% of all cases I do not want to keep any responses, once the parent has been deleted.

Sure, we all know how to code against e.g. the QueryDocumentDelete event or something similar. But how come, that almost all applications, that make heavy use of response documents, employ some kind of "Kill orphaned documents" agent? There might still e.g. be back-end deletions, we have to care about ourselves.

Notes should be able to easily monitor any document deletion (no matter how it was initiated) and could trigger a recoursive deletion procedure. The only drawback I see would be performance. In busy applications we will often just mark documents for deletion, and actually delete them during off-hours. In this scenario, deleting responses automatically would be counter-productive. But that's why I would want it to be an option. Could save a tremendous amount of code.

Notes Client / Other: Change to Folder Removal/Deletion

Author: Michael Kinder
Tags: deletion manage mail
Idea:

Enable a feature where, when a user deletes/removes a folder, that they have an option to delete the messages first and then delete/remove the folder. This can be confusing to users new to Lotus Notes, as the messages are not deleted but that is what many new users expect.

Notes Client / Other Database Applications: Enable soft deletions for Personal Journal

Author: Patrick Kwinten
Tags: soft deletions deletion personal journal
Idea:
Oh my god! I made a meeting report in my Personal Journal and by accident I deleted the document. Now I have no way to recover it since soft deletions is not enabled by default here.

Put this on and provide away to recover my deletions IBM Lotus!
Notes Client / Other Database Applications: Method to clear deletion stubs from a replica

Author: Nathan Chandler
Tags: Deletion stub clear
Idea:

Sometimes it is necessary to perform a restore and 'merge' a restored replica with the production replica. (by replicating the two together). However to do this you need to clear the deletion stubs from one/both replicas. You can try to do this by setting the Space Saving value Delete Documents not modified in x days (not ticking it, just setting the number) because apparently deletion stubs are kept for 1/3 of this value. So, theoretically you should be able to set it to 0, or 1 days to clear out all stubs.

However this method is not reliable. Often you do not get complete restoration of all of the deleted documents which implies that there are still deletion stubs hanging around in the database.

I'd like to have a reliable and easy method for deleting all stubs from a replica.

Domino Server / Other: On Windows platform, make database deletion a recycle bin affair

Author: Mark Demicoli
Tags: deletion database
Idea:

Ever accidentally deleted a database? It can't be that hard to use the Recycle Bin on Windows Platforms instead of effecting an irriversible file system deletion.

This should occur at the API level so that all methods of deleting databases use the OS recycle bin if available.

Notes Client / Mail: Go back to the Inbox after deleting a message

Author: Oliver Regelmann
Tags: mail deletion
Idea:

When a mail is opened for reading and the user deletes it via the DEL key or the button, the next message in his Inbox gets opened. This raises some issues:

- he might sent a return receipt he didn't want to (yet)

- confidential information could be displayed in a moment when it shouldn't

Instead he should be brought back to the Inbox / the folder from where he opened that mail.

Notes Client / Mail: Fast document deletion - make document deletion as fast as 'other' email clients

Author: Mark Demicoli
Tags: deletion views updates
Idea:

Deleting a bunch (or even a single) document from Mail can be tediously slow compared to other email clients. Not sure how others do it quicker, but here is one suggestion for Notes.

When a change to a view occurs, Notes must always trigger a view update on the server then synchronously receive the updated entries.

When talking about changing data, this is a necessary round-trip, but when just deleting documents, the UIView should be able to safely assume that the call to the server will succeed, and just update the UIView immediately while the transaction with the server occurs asynchronously.

If the transaction fails it can be dealt with appropriately. This could be extended to a general view option "Pre-emptive view update" or something like that.
