Traveler / : Traveler should support the 'Apple Tablet' from the git-go when it ships

Author: Craig Wiseman
Tags: apple tablet
Idea:

The Apple tablet looks like it will be announced on 01/27/2010, shipping soon, and rumor has it that it's based on the iPhone platform.

Given that, I'd really like to tell my users that they won't have to wait 1-2 years for Domino to support it.

re: Traveler should support the 'Apple Tablet' from the git-go when it ships

Author: Philip Storry
Comment: Yes, I want support for currently non-existent devices!

For instance, my Matsushita Industries XM-3894-P/LI-B Orbital Bombardment Platform has a calender. (It uses it to control firing times.) Notes should sync with that!

OK, perhaps that was a little too snarky. But we can't really expect support for every new device, especially from the get-go.

I think this request would better be worded as a request to work more closely with manufacturers of mobile platforms (Android, iPhone OS X, Symbian, etc) so that support is more universal, and we have a better chance of it just working out of the box.

But requesting support for rumoured devices is going a little bit too far for me. I'd rather have IBM fixing real issues than chasing shadows like this...

re: Traveler should support the 'Apple Tablet' from the git-go when it ships

Author: Craig Wiseman
Comment: @1 First of all, thanks for your comments!

Reading it again, my short text can be read as snaky. It was NOT intended as such. I had originally drafted this with a nice, detailed request. But reading, I was getting lost in the history here. So I just decided to make it a cut-to-the-chase request.

Some points:
+ The Apple Tablet is not some vague, way in the future product. Reports are pretty consistent that It will be announced within -> two weeks <-, and ship in March. That's not vapor-ware.

+ The Apple Tablet will be BIG. If done right, It has a very good chance of being bigger than the iPhone. It will combine (at least), the functions of the iPhone, iPod, a Netbook, and a Kindle/Nook. It's I.M.P.O.R.T.A.N.T.. Based on the number of requests I've had from folks who are not tech people and don't follow tech trends, this product will have staggeringly quick market penetration.

+ We waited 2 years for iPhone support. We still don't have Android or WebOS support.

+ IBM tried "working closely with Apple" to get iPhone support. I truly believe they did their darndest. Apple just wasn't interested and so IBM had to add ActiveSync support to Domino (just enough to support the iPhone ONLY) to make that work. And ouch, that must have hurt. That means that getting iTab/iGuide support will fall on IBM to do. And that means they need to know WE THINK IT'S IMPORTANT.

+ IBM has not been "quick to the draw" on supporting new, 'early adopter' products. Besides the obvious iPhone support debacle, we're still waiting for WIndows 7 (32/64bit) & Windows Vista (64 bit) connectors for Quickr. And those products had clear roadmaps that IBM could(should?) have been developing to. The pattern here is pretty clear - whatever internal IBM process sets the development emphasis needs to be jogged here.

Author: Charles Robinson
Comment: Sorry, Windows 7 support is far more important to me than anything from Apple. I would rather IBM spend the resources there first.
Author: Craig Wiseman
Comment: @4 - I appreciate your comment and can't argue with it, except to say that you'd think that IBM, small shop though it is, could do both in a reasonable/rapid timeframe.

Author: Craig Wiseman
Comment: Since I'm askin', perhaps I should enumerate that in addition to email/calendar/contacts, quickr/domino support would do wonders as well.
Author: Craig Wiseman
Comment: @1 (Philip) Do you lend out your Orbital Bombardment Platform? It would really help me solve certain problems I'm having at the moment.
