Lotus WCM / : Create WCM Rich Client based on Expeditor

Author: Stuart Mcintyre
Tags: wcm expeditor richclient
Idea:

WCM is a great web content management framework, with good functionality, great infrastructure support and a good number of really impressive case studies out there.

However, it is held back by a difficult, slow, unintuitive and cumbersome admin/authoring UI. Each content item created involved at least 5-10 clicks, two or three page refreshes and limited cutomisation/cut'n'paste facilities. Wilst the API can be used for creating and scripting content, it requires advanced skills and is beyond most SMBs.

Therefore, what is needed is a rich client to be run on the desktop, that allows fast and accurate creation of content, cut and paste from other applications, fast duplication of existing content, and increased ease of management. Given that the WCM authoring portlet is just a Websphere Portal portlet, there is no reason why this functionality couldn't be deployed under Expeditor and/or the Notes8 client. This would greatly improve the product and remove many of the reasons for resistence from web authors.

Author: Stuart Mcintyre
Comment: Mika, do you realise how big the Websphere portfolio of products is? Whilst Domino may benefit from being merged with some elements of Websphere, there will never be a total crossover.

What I'm after is the realisation that Rich Clients beat web interfaces for many user-input-intensive tasks, and authoring of web content fits into this category. Therefore Expeditor/Notes8 may give a way forward in that area.

Stuart
Author: Mika Heinonen
Comment: I've heard rumours that WebSphere and Domino will be joined as one product in future, so probably all components and features will be available in Notes/Domino then too.
Author: Jonathan Bosmans
Comment: I agree, I don't think a web interface is always the best solution in any situatoin.
A clientside API (which iirc is provided for creating portal pages etc in portal 61) seems like a great idea.
