Sametime / Sametime Mobile: Sametime for PalmOS

Author: Craig Wiseman
Tags: palm mobile palmOS
Idea:

There are literally boatloads of PalmOS Treos that can run the IBM microJVM and would love to be able to run Sametime. PalmOS rivals Windows Mobile in terms of deployed and active smartphones.

At lotusphere a few years ago, I went to a session where they used a Treo 600 (eck, acient I know) to talk about the perfect mobile client. I get the whole "multitasking" deal, but other vendors (MunduIM, verichat [RIP - killed by nokia], even the new Centro from Sprint has it built in .

Author: Kerr Rainey
Comment: are palm still relevant? I thought they were dead, just hadn't stopped twitching yet. I lost my old T3 a couple of months ago and I don't think Palm have a compelling replacement out there. Out of the 4 Treos on sale in the UK, 3 are WinMob and the other is still on the palm os that should have been replaced 3.5 years ago.

I think Palm is going to have to come up with something compelling to show that they are worth investing any resources in.
Author: Craig Wiseman
Comment: @1 - a fair question, although it sounds amazingly similar to what not infrequently hear when discussing Notes/Domino. Just swap some names & numbers.

Here in the US, PalmOS-based handhelds are still selling pretty well, at a pace or exceeding WinMob sales.

Alledgely, Palm will be coming out with a Linux-based OS that will run PalmOS apps unchanged (that's why they launched the PalmOS VM for Nokia devices).

Consumer Reports just reviewed smart phones (for a human perspective) and found that the PalmOS was the "most usable and flexible" of the smartphones.

So, I'd say "yes - still relevant."
Author: Kerr Rainey
Comment: I'll admit that I stop watching Palm about a year ago. I've had 3 palm OS was very happy with them, but they dropped the ball after the T3 came out. Last time I looked they where investing money in the white elephant Foleo. It would be great if they got their act together, but they are going to have to work hard for it.
