This is not really an idea. The site is intended to gather ideas for improving Lotus Software. Maybe you'd like to change the content to be more tailored to that aim?

Tags are meant to be freeform, there is no reason a content administrator can't come back and add relevant tags to a record at a later point, but as soon as you create a taxonomy of tags, you kill the ability for the system to evolve and rely on the administrator to keep up with the changing business.

This is something which has been on our radar for quite a while now. The problem we are struggling with is the fact that most of our clients run IdeaJam behind the firewall. There are numerous internet URL Shortening services, but, as far as I know, there isn't a dominant one (or even three of four) "on premises" URL shortening service which runs behind the firewall.

If you have a particular preference then please do let us know.

You're right in theory, however in reality we find that there is a very low fake user ratio. In the three years we've been running this public site I can remember less than ten spam accounts which have been registered. You'll also see a *very* large IdeaJam site run at { Link } where they also do not have any spam account problems.

This is definitely something we've thought about before, however the issues which we're not sure how to deal with are which "behind the firewall Twitter clones" should we support and also how should we deal with URL shortening services.

The current IdeaJam / Twitter integration uses the is.gd URL shortener, but I'm not aware of a similar service behind the firewall which we could use reliably across many customers.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Just a bit more info on this one. We've tracked down what seems to be a Dojo 1.3.2 bug. It's already been fixed in future versions of Domino so for the moment we're going to leave it and see what's happening with upcoming versions of Domino. In the meantime, apologies to Chrome users (such as myself!)

Great idea Simon. We've had a fair bit of feedback from early beta testers about the IQJam API which we are trying to roll as much into the v1.0 product as possible. This should definitely be possible to add to the list.

It'd be quite simple to create your own Custom Control to do this, just have the URL, width, height etc set in the Property Definition section of the Custom Control.

Totally agree with you Joseph. At the moment you can indent code blocks etc but I am unable to find a Dojo Rich Text plugin that specifically handles code or pre tags. I'm sure it's possible but we have to be very careful about staying "standard" with all of our software so that we can genuinely claim to offer "File -> Application -> New IQJam" installation.

I'm assuming that Tommy knows the various ways of getting an id, but for those XPages newbies, there are two main ways of getting hold of the id of an element as it is rendered to the browser (so that you can use the id in client side Javascript):

In the JS for an object you can use "#{id:myfield}" which will get translated into something like "view:_id1:_id2:_id51:repeat1:1:_id53:myfield"

In server side JS code where you need to get a field you can use "getClientId("myfield")"

@5 - We have weighted each of the different types of activity, so an idea is worth a lot more than a vote and so on, but 900 votes deserves some recognition I think ;-)

@6 - That's a great idea. When we were originally asked to consider this feature it was relatively new and small IdeaJam sites. We'll see how people feel the first stab is working and then add features for future releases.

This was possible in the NSFDB2 Query Access views which have just gone into mantenance. In XPages, you can effectively do joins in views, but I'd say this sounds more like you need to be using a relational database.

Wouldn't constraints rather go against the Notes Database structure, it is by definition, not a relational database.

I'd say if you need such strict data integrity then you should probably be using a relational database. You can still access that data from Notes if needs be.

When did this issue happen? We did have to restart the server yesterday for some regular maintenance so that may have been the issue. Otherwise we have our sessions set to last for a really long time so you should never see this issue.

This is already possible in XPages, just write the code to go in the type-ahead properties for a field.

It's reasonably easy to do with classic Domino as well. We use a variant of the approach when you create a new idea here and the site suggests similar ideas based upon the idea title.

Not sure I understand the idea. Are you saying that anyone should be able to create new IdeaSpaces? If so then I disagree, that is an administrative task. Of course anyone set up as an administrator can create new IdeaSpaces either from the Notes client or from the web admin console for IdeaJam.

As far as I can tell that decision has already been made with most development time spent on Server Side Javascript. I am certainly happy with that as the possibilities offered by XPages are a huge leap forwards.

This is something which is already built into FCKEditor (the rich text editor that IdeaJam uses). It's not something that we will be taking on as a specific feature in IdeaJam itself.

Can you not use ACL Group to manage, it doesn't sound like a good idea to have that many individuals added to an ACL.

I think it's a good idea, I just need to work out a safe and fast way to store the information.

A simple question for an interesting thought...

Why is the manager not involved in the site, submitting their own ideas, commenting and voting on other's ideas? If they were then surely they would see what is getting the best feedback, if they aren't then I suspect there may be bigger problems that need to be dealt with.

We didn't turn these on by default just because we are paranoid about becoming seen as a spam mail sender. But we should certainly highlight that the mail options are available on your profile.

It's the fact that I have to run two mail clients, when Notes could implement a decent IMAP interface and let me run just one, and then also give me the benefits of offline replication etc etc.

I suspect I'm not a normal case in that my work machine is also my home machine, but can't hurt to ask can it. :-)

Agreed with Phil, I really, really want a good IMAP experience in Notes. It's a pain having to run another mail client for IMAP mail on top of Notes.

Just to give some background. We did develop a way of completely anonymising voting but our general view is that anonymous voting is "A Bad Thing" so it never really got the attention it would need to become a core feature.

If the votes here indicate differently then obviously we will revisit.

It's a nice idea and I promoted. However, I suspect that in terms of performance it may be a challenge to implement.

I agree with Stuart there are any number of focus issues in the Eclipse clients (both Notes and Designer) that really need to be dealt with. They are just annoyances, but when you spend your life in there, annoyances quickly turn into something more serious.

Are you finding @DbLookups not performing well then? Often if you do have problems it's down to view design. Generally I am happy with the @DbLookup, although I would like the limits to be extended, but there's already an idea for that: { Link }

@1 - Agreed, effort is going to be spent on XPages not classic Domino web development. However some things would be relatively easy to leverage using Dojo in classic, I get the impression that this may be one of those areas.

@2 - I wouldn't recommend going back and re-writing all your applications, but when you do have to go and make changes, add new forms or create new applications I am sufficiently sold on XPages that I would use that rather than using "classic" Domino.

In terms of having to do everything twice, you have to do that now with Notes and Web anyway, so I don't see any big issue there.

I suspect any changes to "classic" web development are onto a loser unfortunately now that we have XPages, but I totally agree this is a good idea.

We plan to completely overhaul how Idea Linking works in a future version and this is very much on the list of things to do as part of that task.

You are able to edit the DXL of a design element by right clicking on it in 8.5 and choosing "Edit with DXL..."

Maybe a popup is too much, a count of "unsent" mail in the navigator in the same way that you have a count of unread mail in the inbox may be enough.

@6 - For our archiving, we allow the administrator to choose the timeframe that inactive ideas can remain visible in the system. In conjunction with Jeff's idea, I think we can get towards something that will work for very large, long term IdeaJam sites like this one.

I should probably also say that a lot of our customers actually run their IdeaJams as short term idea gathering exercises so in those cases a lot of these problems won't arise.

We do know that lots of influential IBM-ers read IdeaJam on a daily basis and there are several ideas which have been submitted that are being addressed in the upcoming 8.5 release. Also, we really like Jeff's idea, and are working out ways that it can be implemented at the moment.

I'm afraid we just can't legislate for all of the different internet security products out there that change the basic functionality of the standard web browsers.

At the moment we test IdeaJam to work on IE6 / IE7, Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 (Mac and Windows) and Safari 3 and Safari for the iPhone as this covers well over 99% of our users. We don't include any security software on top of that.

If I've understood correctly you've created a private link when you were logged in, then you logged out and you can no longer see the private link anywhere?

This is working correctly, you will only see your private links when you are logged in. And when you are logged in you will see them in both the "All Links" and "My Links" screens but they will show up with a "private" flag so that you know that only you can see them.

It's a nice idea, but given that even opening 2K7 docs in Office 2K3 requires a fairly meaty Office download, it seems unlikely to happen any time soon.

I'm with Rob here. The illusion of security can actually be worse than nothing at all.

It's certainly easy to do. But we did think that the order of when the votes were cast was the more logical sort method.

What does everyone else think?

@2 - The benefit to me over the years would be huge. In strictly controlled environments, Notes Admins often (rightly) massively restrict rights of agents to access the disk, so you have to go through a whole approval process just to run an agent with rights to save the attachment to disk and then re-attach it to the document. I like the idea. I don't think that spam is a particularly big problem. If you look in the main rejected view you'll see that we have only rejected 4 ideas, and those were test postings rather than anything offensive. Spam is even less likely in a corporate setting (I would have thought).

But I definitely like the notification idea.

Currently IdeaSpace administrators have editor access to all ideas in their IdeaSpace, so they can recategorize, reject, withdraw or even edit the idea as they see fit.

I think that as long as we don't show draft ideas to anyone else then it shouldn't be a problem. We'll just provide a space for Drafts to be showed if you have any.

That's always the first change I make to my mail file when I get a new account. That and a button to remove the read receipt flag. I find them incredibly rude and invasive.

I can see the attraction of moving SaveOptions to the properties dialog, so as long at the functionality stays the same as the current implementation offers then a promote from me.

It's a very good point Rob, but I still think it would be nice to at least offer auto refresh as an option, whether that's for the user or admin to enable / disable I don't really mind.

@6 - From all reports at Lotusphere, the right people in IBM are watching IdeaJam so keep the ideas and feedback coming. It's a long process but hopefully we'll start to see the results of the community ideas coming through soon.

I'll answer for Bruce. For the last couple of months we've been working hard on the unglamorous but important tasks of making the IdeaJam back end saleable. So we have basically locked features for the moment.

That being said we have an enormous list of tasks to do for version 1.1 which we'll be starting to develop shortly. So, in the short term we'll be upgrading this site with the latest version of the code which adds a lot of little tweaks. And then in the next month or two there will be further feature releases once we have settled down on the behind the scenes stuff.

Couldn't agree more Patrick, it's a most annoying hurdle that we have to work around all the time.

Or you could just write an agent that goes and changes the view selection formulae once a year, it would save a lot of overhead.

I suspect this won't get done as the Workspace is only tolerated for us old school Notes users. But it's a great idea.

I'm wondering if this is more of a filtering issue. That developers aren't interested in Admin ideas and vice versa (of course noone is interested in users ;-) ). In the next version of IdeaJam we have added the ability to set your default IdeaSpace, so maybe the ideas that you're not interested in will pass you by and you won't vote?

Just floating the thought anyway.

These are all good ideas Starrow, but I think they should probably be split out into seperate entries. Originally we did provide a login on the same page feature, but the early users of the site found that annoying so we removed it and went for the classic login screen approach. Of course the original code is still available so it would be relatively easy to re-enable if the support is there.

In the meantime we have been investigating other solutions for keeping people logged on for a longer period of time. Hopefully we will have some progress on that front soon.

In the Bloggers Q&A with Mike Rhodin at Lotusphere it was hinted at very strongly that both Admin and Designer clients for Linux and Mac were on the way in the 8.5 - 9.0 time frame.

From the Design Help file: "In Standard Outline views, filters a view to display only documents from a specified category. In Calendar views, filters a view to display only documents that contain a specified string in a specified column."

My understanding is that because Domino Designer 8.5 will be based on Eclipse, you will be add your own plugins like Aptana. But of course there will be an improved JS editor included anyway, although I haven't played with it to say how good it is yet.

You can do a lot of this with the Ytria tools at the moment, but I agree it would be a nice thing to have out of the box.

Under the Notes Client idea space, there is a sub category of "Other Database Applications" which I think probably covers templates.

It's not really practical to have every RSS feed, but we would be having feeds for every view, which with the current setup would lead to over 50 (as a guess-timate).

@8 - I just use the keyboard that comes with Windows... Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Accessibility --> On Screen Keyboard, it offers enough functionality to be able to send a Ctrl-Break to Notes.

Couldn't agree more, with my MBP where I don't have a Break key, I have to get up a soft keyboard to break out of agents etc. Yes Please :-)

It's certainly possible with AJAX but would be a lot simpler if you could embed multiple views on the form.

It's a good idea Axel. I can think of several instances where this would have been helpful to me. But I think it should be a form property, that if selected should disable certain other abilities, like Form formulae in a view or computed subforms to prevent you from adding other fields. Promote for me.

The new sidebar list is the most active ideas from the last 28 days (be that votes or comments) with the most active idea at the top.

It's a fair point that you don't know if you've voted on each idea, we'll try and work out a way of indicating ideas that you haven't voted on. But hopefully this list is slightly more useful and won't weight the voting as much as the old one.

Just this single change would make Domino so much more powerful than it currently is. At the moment to do things like AJAX type-aheads etc we have to write an enormous amount of code. But with this it would make life so much easier.

You're effectively talking about joins (or DBLookups) in views which is what DB2NSF has given us but only with the added complexity of running DB2 as well as Domino. I think this is basically an impossibility within the current Notes architecture. However desirable it might be.

The way I work in Designer is totally separate from Notes. I'd rather look after bookmarks myself.

@5 - Yes I tried it on an R7 server and found it to be *hugely* unstable. Must admit to not having tried with R8 but in reality there are very few companies that would allow an undocumented hack to be turned on at the server level!

You seem to be coming round to Nathan's view that voting should have some cost associated with it (see his battle idea { Link } ).

I am still to be convinced. I like the simplicity of just voting up and down but I do agree we need some way of having top ideas. I think Rob's idea is probably the best way of doing this: { Link }

It's a nice idea but unfortunately from the little I know if NSFDB2 it's never going to happen. My understanding is that changes were made to DB2 to support Domino requirements and that's obviously not going to be possible for non-IBM RDBMS's.

My understanding is that Dojo is the "preferred" framework simply because IBM is involved in Dojo development. That being said I'd hate to be forced down one route when each framework is suited to different requirements. For example I've worked on three major applications this year (of which Idea Jam is one) and have used MooTools, Dojo and Prototype / Scriptaculous. Each was used for very specific reasons and each was relatively simple to get going in Domino.

Now maybe what is needed is a set of articles on how to integrate the major frameworks into Domino. And also a website where you can download an nsf that has each framework pre-imported as file design elements.

I've re-released the What's Hot page but now with added functionality. The code takes into account both the number of votes and the number of comments so that active ideas in either sense of the word will show up.

Hopefully this will be a useful and interesting way of seeing what is going on at the Idea Jam.

That's fine if you're working on a database on your own. But if there are multiple developers I think alphabetical would make it easier to find the design element you're looking for.

What the "What's Hot" page shows is the top 20 ideas that have had the most number of votes (whether they be promotes or demotes) within a certain time frame. We've actually removed the link for the moment because it wasn't quite ready for prime time but it should be re-released over the weekend.

With regards to @4, the What's Hot doesn't differentiate between very popular or unpopular ideas, it shows the most active ideas by the total number of votes.

I think we'll probablu integrate the page into the statistics page somehow. Still need to do some planning there.

When you get prompted to login, the word Login on the alert box is a hyperlink to the login screen. We would like to work out a way of maintaining authentication over time but unfortunately I am not aware of any way to do this for the reasons that Mika has already mentioned. If you open an idea you'll see that the sub category is a hyper link which then takes you into a set of views which just displays other ideas in the same sub category. Hope this is what you were after.

I agree it's a nice to have, but realistically this is an administration issue. We need to have better tools to link / merge ideas when there are duplicates.

I agree with Axel, consistency across the system is important. Also I don't think there are many people in our community that are going to let others influence their opinions that much ;-)

This sounds like a good idea, but one for an ISV to produce as a developer tool rather than a core piece of Notes client functionality.

I agree with @8, we've chatted about this issue before and came to the opinion that forcing people to leave a comment will not actually add any benefit. In the end I think demotes with an opinion will probably carry more weight with the idea proposer and the rest of the community.

@4 / 5 - Yes we do need to work out a way to merge ideas. It's on the list of things to do. In the meantime I can exclusively reveal that Mr Elgort is currently beavering away on this very idea.

@4 - Scott you should have an edit button on ideas that you submitted. Please feel free to go and edit the idea. I'll leave it up to you how you highlight the changes to your idea. Good to see such great feedback :-)

It's a good idea Stuart, but we'll need to work out a way of implementing within a Domino environment. Not something I've ever tried before but it will be added to the (ever expanding) list :-)

We have added a new feature that will send you an email when someone comments on your ideas. By default this is turned off so to enable it, log in, go to your profile, edit it and you'll find a radio button at the bottom of the form.

Hope this is what you were after.

Actually in an early beta we did have functionality that allowed you to see the ideas and comments from the views and the general concensus was that usability suffered. I guess that's our fault for the implementation and I'm sure we'll re-visit in future versions but for the moment we want to get a good solid base in and working.

As long as the default is to act as it currently does I think this is a good idea.

I don't think people will flame for good suggestions for ISVs. In fact I'm fairly sure I have suggested ISV solutions to problems people have raised already. Generally these things should be self regulating, if someone tries to pimp their product where it's not valid they will get flamed, otherwise people will be grateful for the help.

Couldn't agree more. It's only Domino Designer that keeps me running Windows at all. I use a MBP all day every day but have to fire up VMWare most of the time to do my Domino development. The day that I can dump Windows altogether I will buy the entire Domino Designer development team a round ;-)

I agree Ben. I had hoped that the view of most commented might help out there but as soon as ideas fall off the front page they need some help to stay alive. We need to work out some way of flagging ideas that are neutral but stimulate a lot of comments.

What would be great is a web interface so that those of us on an iPhone / iPod Touch could access the sessions db.

I've not thought through any sort of requirements at all but my plan for '08 is to just have my Touch with me during the day so I need something that can either be in my calendar or on the web.

Well I guess the most obvious requirement I can think of is how to export views to a spreadsheet with a view action button. But then it would be great to add some charting as well to really knock the end user out ;-)

It's not perfect Daniele but you can use the $$HTMLFrontMatter field to at least set the HTML tag of the pages that you generate. Still promoting this idea though as full control would be nice.

@7 - Bruce is right, we haven't implemented the hiding in the idea itself yet as, bizarrely, it's more complex than in the views. It is slated for a post go-live date, but pretty high up the priority list.

I don't disagree Thomas. The reason I'm demoting though is that I would like tags to happen organically. Also I'm worried that maintaining a black list of tags could become a maintenance problem. We are trying to make the system as low maintenance as possible.

We've released a new version of the Idea Jam template today which changes the messages and voting in general. I'm going to mark this idea as completed.

@1 - Got to disagree Mika, I use Java well over 50% of the time and find it great, easier to write complex code than LS and very flexible.

@2 - This would make a great OpenNTF project if you ever finish writing your Unit Test classes.

I understand the reasoning but I can't think of any other programs that have Paste Special as a right click option. By its nature it's a non-standard action and the right click menu is already cluttered enough. But I'm obviously outvoted on this one :-)

What Bruce said is spot on, but there is another driver for the limitation...

The only way to generate the list of unvoted ideas is with an agent and I didn't want to process the entire view of ideas every time the page is loaded purely due to performance issues. So I made an arbitrary limit to show the 20 most recent unvoted ideas. If you have any ideas about how I could redesign this and have it still work efficiently then please drop me a line.
