Notes C++ API is questionable, but the Notes C API is the most important interface to Domino databases. You can remove Java, LotusScript, Notes Client, Notes Designer, whatever, but never leave us the Notes C API, it's what ISVs use to build new technologies for Domino. Like the new OpenSource/Commercial Lotus Traveller project for Symbian Platforms, like for Nokia Communicator E90, the best (only?) phone for business needs on the planet.

What' IN now are now sharp corners, and also slant corners, but both in 3D style. The addinional kick comes from the virtually non existant microfades of colors, like seen in Notes 8 Standard. It just gives the feel that it looks better, but the eye can't tell why. And then AmigaOS 4.0 is just around the corner and will show once again to the whole IT industry how things should be done, for the next 20 years again.

@2 - Yeah, I feel your pain. It's not IdeaJam's fault, but the core HTTP task functionality of Domino. I'm also running several huge Web Apps on Domino, and those lacks just have to be "fixed" by informing users about the restrictions.

The core problem is that IdeaJam does not really remember your login. Check out boards which are using SMF, PHPBB, or basically ANY Non-Domino board, they all remember your login. Domino 9 must come soon, I can't believe how Lotus has been slacking on the improvement of Domino, which is their MAIN product.

Truly basic quality stuff. Presentations in Office 95 PPT/ODF format should be mandatory. Yet alone the fact that some people in LotuSphere would like to visit concurrent chronical sessions, and in addition that they want to review the sessions with their colleaques back at their office.

I use always keyboard shortcuts to replace design. A simple Alt-FTF, Cursor down, Enter. It's like pressing one key when you get this macroed into your fingers.

Fine, I can come up with the business costs of SUSE Enterprise Linux, but just make Quickr to run on it too. This IS supposed to be the only good platform at the moment, and IBM should support "the only good" platform.

MacOSX is just another Unix clone. There are far better server optimized Linux distributions for server performance, SUSE Enterprise as a default recommendation.

SPCPL people should also get treated like Kings. They should get free LotuSphere invitation, and a limousine with a chauffeur to drive them around DisneyWorld at any time of the day.

Ubuntu is like the "Windows" of the Linux world. No-brainer installation and use. But it also is not meant to be optimized for certain purposes. Fedora has a "soft mode" selection between Client and Server installation, but that's about it. If you're looking for real hardware optimized server solutions, check out SUSE Enterprise or CentOS. So far SUSE has beaten all platforms in pure I/O performance, and only AIX6 is getting closer to challenge it.

@6 - 1) I don't mean an assimilation of IBM, the control and ownership should always stay at the OpenNotes community, that gives more credibility (not that IBM would be incredible, it's just more the voice of free will). What I'm saying is that numbers count, nothing else. Yes, IdeaJam came out of Beta quite recently, so the natural base of users will still raise over time, but some marketing would also speed up the process.

A server replicating with itself is a very possible scenario. I use this feature to replicate real-time transaction data from a 4GB RAM disk to the hard drive replica databases of the same Domino server. RAM Disks are unavoidable when you have 300000+ users who perform several item transactions per second.

More user-based customization is always good.

There are Standard APIs to support Notes mail functions: OLE/COM/C API. Of course C API works the best, but has longer development times. The Visual Basic COM interface is the easiest to program, but it has many bugs due to Microsoft Office. A pure Visual Studio Basic program overcomes those bugs. I suggest using Visual Basic 6, as newer versions of Visual Basic are crap, and lower the development time again.

Microsoft OpenXML format was rejected by the Standardization Organization, so ODF is at the moment THE Standard for office files. OpenOffice users save their files of course still in Office 95 format, so that a broader audience can use them. But in future, more and more people should start to use ODF, and then it's not needed to save as Office 95 anymore. A new standard would take again years before it's supported by all users.

I think this is a good solution, since at the moment IBM is using their own internal sites to decide about final stuff, but they should be more open to the public. This is not (yet) an official IBM suggestion site, but I would like to see become it one.

Instead of using @Formula, Notes/Domino should be improved to be able to use LotusScript everywhere instead of Formula.

You could try Lotus Quickr, it has a one mouse click Theme changing. Lotus Quickr has lots of features which people are even nowadays making from scratch or trying to reproduce. It's a waste of time and money. You can customize the Quickr templates to your business needs (although there is seldom a need to). You can't do that in SharePoint, you will even lose all data when changing a "Theme" or "Template".

I would strongly recommend Office 2007 (and other Office versions too) users to upgrade to OpenOffice. Keeping up Microsoft's exotic formats gives really no business benefit to anyone.

I don't hate Microsoft because they are huge, I hate them because they are doing absolutely everything wrong. Windows, BizTalk, Intel based, .NET, DirectX 10 for Vista only, Vista itself, no backward compatibility, no stability, full of security holes, full of lies in marketing, etc... Just look at IBM, although IBM is also not the best, but at least they do things much much better than Microsoft. The best is still OpenSource.

I strongly agree with Daniel. The Java client is a nice experiment, but not really ready for production. Linux should either have a native C++ Admin Client or a way to use text mode remote shell (servers don't usually need/have graphics cards and UI's).

Please not PDF. My computer doesn't have a program which can read PDF file format. I would prefer ODF or HTML, since it works on any computer. Quickr site would be good too, then I don't need any programs on my computer.

True dat. I've experience too often that people are not aware of how small their text is presentation actually is. And in additional lots of text on one page, is completely ignored. If you want the text to mean and say something, make it big and standalone. Even better with some bass sound effects.

Yes, the 16K and 32K limits have been around for too long. Doing all fields with RichText is too cumbersome. Make the text fields 4GB of size, as Strings in LS are too.

In addition to the CLP title, there should be also a distinct PCLP title, and even an superior SPCPL certification, and each should be completely seperate for Admin/Dev paths. Each time the number of people who earned the highest certification, there should be added a new, even more difficult certifaction. Only that way companies can distinquish between low end CLP and high end CLP persons.

I think the chances to get many companies to switch from Windows to Linux are very good at the moment. I see a lot of people complaining about Vista, and Windows XP will have no support in a year of two, and Fedora 8 was just released, which was easier to install than Windows for me. Notes works, OpenOffice works, and Wine/VirtualBox can take care of many old Windows apps.

Domino outperforms DB/2 in many areas, but DB/2 also outperforms Domino in many areas. The sad thing however is that you get DB/2 for free if you are it with Domino, but the Domino to DB/2 interface is very slow, and could be made 1000 times faster with a simple hack.

The whole Rich Text idea is kinda corrupted. There should be only HTML, which the Notes client displays exactly in the same way as Firefox. People should remember that the whole idea of the Notes Client was to be a world-wide TCP/IP browser, somehow Mozilla was faster and won the race, but it's not too late to adopt to the current standards.

LOL, Quickr is probably the easiest program to install ever. I just installed it today (Quickr 8.0.0.2). It doesn't ask anything, just a user name for the Admin.

However, Quickr 8.0.0.2 is still very early in development, although it's acceptable stable. If you tolerate to downgrade a Domino 8.0 x32 server to Domino 7.0.2FP2 and all Vista x64 Enterprise and Fedora 8 x64 workstations to Windows XP x32, it works OK.

I think Notes/Domino should be OpenSource, it would really speed up the development. IBM still gets enough money from POWER6+ CPU systems, as there are no noname-POWERx system that I know of :)

Well, I didn't say anyone could use the configuration area, so if you say it's for Admins only, it can work as well (as long as they are actively tracking new needs and requests for areas).

I'm getting my own Quickr server next monday too, I'm so gonna Bang Bang Sharepoint down, when presenting it to all Managers in our company :) Actually I still need Quickr 8.1 which fusions the J2EE and Domino version of Quickr into one simple term, and runs on Domino 8 x64 too. But yes, history display is a good general feature, my votes up.

It's sometimes difficult to say what is a bug and what is an intentional change in Notes 8 Standard, so lets make it simple: anything which works in Notes 8 Basic and doesn't work in Notes 8 Standard is a bug. I declare this as a global standard rule :)

Just add an feature to add new Idea Spaces. It doesn't need to be directly from the Idea Form, but a seperate IdeaJam configuration area would also work (to prevent too much random Idea spaces to be created by users).

In general, the Lotus Templates are quite useless too. I've tried a few times to use a Discussion or Library template from Lotus, but they just don't work - either they try to load some Java applet, which doesn't work on any PC I have tried, or they have some hardcoded bitmaps, and are not primarily meant for Web use. On the Notes side they seem to work fine though. For web applications it seems the easiest way is still to hit Ctrl-N in your Notes Client and add some Forms and Views in Designer. But I guess the main source for standard Domino apps is OpenNTF.org then.

Yes, notes.net forums area actually an quite underestimated resource. They help in most cases to resolve issues much faster than real SPR tickets to IBM. IBM should really put more resources in improving notes.net.

C++ is faster than Java, LotusScript is faster to develop than Java. Java is useless.

Ad-Hoc right click menu is a good idea, I used to teach Excel users how to learn Excel in 1 second: right click everything. Using the Menu bar takes too much time to learn all options, but of course it's also good to have for reference.

I voted "No" because I think Notes 8 Basic is better, and Lotus should focus their development on Domino 8 / Notes 8 Basic, and do Notes 8 Standard development only when the first two are fixed satisfactory.

Notes should only send a "difference" info to the receipients, and remove all duplicate mails which contain the same history as the last "Reply to all with history" mail. That way, no attachments, no body text would be ever sent twice.

IdeaJam is the best idea flow application at the moment.
If pricing is dynamic to the budget of the hosting company, it's as good as OpenSource. But I think the competition is also hard, and soon there will be also similar OpenSource solutions available (not from me at the moment though :), but then you have to consider also the handicaps/benefits the benefits if it's Crap-DB based, or Domino/DB2 based.

The server should have an daily and weekly program document which does compacting of all databases automatically. You wouldn't want users to initiate a compact, and taking a lot of CPU load during work hours.

Domino's compact is quite bugged anyway, I've written a better compact command: xcompact Beta 1, and it's free. However it destroys unread marks, which I think are useless anyway: { Link }

I've asked Ed Brill how to get an XSP license for my Domino 8 server, but I haven't heard back yet. However, according to the Domino 8 Utility Server Express license, I can host own applications, and can of course also have people use my templates. If you have an application which is based on my templates, I can host it for $15 per year per started GB. If you want additionally an own domain for your site (.com, etc...) it costs $15 per year also.

It's still not working as it should in Notes 8, for example try this:
Select doc 1, hold Ctrl hand select doc 3, hold Ctrl and select doc 5, now hold Shift and select doc 10. It should keep doc 1 and 3 in the selection also, but it just kills their selection and selects doc 5 to 10.
I need to add this to my "Why Notes Sucks" list also :)

I don't see any benefit that especially IBM should host this kind of service. There are thousands of better service providers out there who have faster response times. IBM has lost the focus on important things like Domino totally, but a new hope is coming with Domino 9.

I've posted an mail template mod on notes.net which allows the users to enter also a URL into the sig field in the preferences. The URL will be re-loaded if it's not found in the temp directory of the current workstation. That mod, and also the manual input of HTML code into the sig field should be both saved into the users' mail file instead of harddisk.

Notes ID's should work like Web ID's, all you need is a Person Document.

That's good idea, however it should be optional, and default to OFF. The parameter should be configured from the Server Document.
