Mail print as PDF or export as PDF (03 Jun 2013)This is basically a good suggestion, but I'm not sure putting it in the Notes client is a good idea. There are several applications available to make it possible to print any kind of document to a PDF with full fidelity, both free and paid-for. Adding that functionality to the Notes client could only serve to make an already heavy client even heavier, without really adding relevant functionality. /Peter |
Set scope for debugger (20 Mar 2013)It's definately a pain, but then there are those times when you need to debug a multi-database application... |
@Formula library (06 Dec 2012)If your formula gets complex enough to require a Formula Library, then maybe you should use LS or Java instead? /Peter |
Internet Address in Multi-Purpose Group (28 May 2012) |
Exclude Contacts and other Non-Mail items from Unread Mark count (13 Feb 2012)This is the downside of having a mail client that isn't dedicated to being a mail client. The best way to solve this would probably be to have better options to define which types of documents should maintain unread marks. |
Provide a configurable path for saving mail attachments (10 Feb 2012)I haven't actually seen this setting in Outlook, but it sounds like a good idea. |
Spam Rule Option: "Add to Domino Domain Spamlist" (23 Dec 2011)I didn't say that you couldn't trust an internal spam rules database. I said that an internal spam rules database that's being fed by your users can't be trusted. Normal users can't make the distinction between spam and real mail. |
Spam Rule Option: "Add to Domino Domain Spamlist" (19 Dec 2011)Kenneth: My opinion exactly! Thanks for expressing it! |
Spam Rule Option: "Add to Domino Domain Spamlist" (17 Dec 2011)What you call "nasty ones" is users adding sh*t to the spam database, which makes legitimate mail bounce. |
Spam Rule Option: "Add to Domino Domain Spamlist" (17 Dec 2011)IMO, users can't be trusted to make this kind of decision. You will end up with an unusable spam database. |
Change the look and feel for classic Notes apps (23 Oct 2011)I agree completely, but can also conclude that this will never happen. IBM has already "modernized" Notes with xPages, and there's no interest in doing anything about the Notes client interface in any other way. |
Integrate Lotus Workflow applications in AdminP user rename requests (22 Jun 2011)Can you give an example of this? |
Phone number recognition (14 Apr 2011)On my Android phone, with Traveler, I just tap on a phone number in the body field of a mail, and it brings up the phone app with that number. Doesn't this work for you? |
Lotus Forgot Series: Make MTBF an integral part of the server software (was in the Sandbox) (29 Mar 2011)And remember to also vote for bringing back the Sandbox here: { Link } |
Lotus Forgot Series: Bring back the Diff tool (from R4) that compared two documents selected in a view (29 Mar 2011)And remember to also vote for bringing back the Sandbox here: { Link } |
Ability to use field values in twistie image formula of ViewColumn (16 Mar 2011)The twistie is a navigation element. It would be extremely confusing for users, if a navigation element like this, would look different for different categories. It's already possible to choose an image of your own as the twistie image. |
File and print share (03 Mar 2011)File and Print sharing is the job of the operating system. No matter which operating system your Domino server runs on, it will have some kind of File and Print sharing functionality, so to have it in Domino is completely superfluous. |
Report abuse (e.g. comments) (24 Feb 2011)Maybe the possibility to report as spam both ideas and comments? |
Create Domino Internet Application Server w/ OAuth/OpenID/FacebookConnect Support (23 Feb 2011)Sean, I agree with the support part of this idea, but not the limitations. The licensing would need to not be based on registered users, though. If IBM is to develop a new Admin interface to this server, it'll never get done. |
Dashboard in Lotus Client (25 Jan 2011)Is this an idea, or is it a question? |
6 ideas for Lotus Notes calendar functions (03 Dec 2010)I really think you should split this idea into 6 different ones. |
Schema-aware type ahead feature. (05 Oct 2010)@Giulio: The only way I can see this working is if there is a preference, and the default is off. Most developers I know work on a shared server that is far away from them. Some of them have to do their work on slow lines, like connected via VPN to the customer's network. Your 0.5 seconds to load into cache, could be more like 2 - 3 minutes. We can't all do our development locally, or on a development server standing next to us. |
Schema-aware type ahead feature. (05 Oct 2010)OK, so with a hundred forms in your database, where 20 have more than 100 fields each, and almost all of them uses at least 1 subform, with at least 10 fields per subform, how long do you want to wait before the type-ahead box pops up? |
Make the file attachment viewers available outside of Notes (05 Oct 2010)I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of "without risk". It wasn't that long ago, that we had a security warning about the internal Notes attachment viewer being susceptible to malware. The workaround was to disable it for several file types. From time to time, I do use the Notes internal file viewer, when I find a file that I don't have an installed program to view. It's very convenient to use Notes for that too. Using the file viewer as multi-purpose file viewers, directly from the OS, is not ideal for me. There are several 3rd party file viewers out there, most of them probably better suited to the task. |
Automatically delete dead mail (router) (01 Oct 2010)@Mark, It's not hard to do. All you really need is a Mail-In-Database document in the Domino Directory, and preferrably a view for incoming mail, and an agent to process the mail. You could even create a separate database/application to use as a black hole. One agent to delete all incoming mail, if you're not interested in checking them. This is easy stuff, nothing to it. You difinately don't need me for it... :-) |
Automatically delete dead mail (router) (01 Oct 2010)@Mark, If your aplication is sending mail with invalid addresses, it should also have a valid return address. The return address should be in an application that could properly handle the return. It's a bug in your application, not a fault in the infrastructure. |
Links on messages and referrer issue... (01 Oct 2010)Is this a suggestion, or merely a reflection? Are you reporting a bug, ar just commenting on functionality of the web browser? |
Automatically delete dead mail (router) (01 Oct 2010)I haven't seen dead mail in the mail.box since I upgraded to version 6, and implemented the incoming mail checks, so I think this is a non-issue. As David suggests, there's also a functional solution for this already, so I'm demoting this. |
Department Address book (30 Sep 2010)@4: I'm sorry, but if the user can't be trusted to handle a local replica, and you don't want any administrator intervention, then you're probably out of options. |
Department Address book (30 Sep 2010)There are already at least 2 ways to do this. Using the old way of Cascading Domino Directories, or the new way with Directory Assistance. Using policies, you can have a directory (database) replicated to the user's client, so the user doesn't have to know anything about it. |
Add a 'Disable Reply All' toggle to emails (14 Sep 2010)There's no point to Message Recall, and I objected to it being introduced in Domino. Prevent Copying, is a lot older, from when Notes was the only viable client, I believe. I would object to it as a new feature if it was introduced today. Regarding removing features from Notes and Domino, I don't see the point, unless there's some really pressing need to remove them, and that goes for any feature, including your suggested one. |
Add a 'Disable Reply All' toggle to emails (14 Sep 2010)Since this would be a Notes-only solution, there's really no point to it, and as Alan and David noted, there are workarounds for this problem. |
Don't overwrite favicon.ico if it already exists (06 Sep 2010)To create a substitution rule: Open upp the Internet Site document. Click on "Web Site..." and choose "Create Rule" Enter a description for the rule. Change the type of rule to Substitution. Enter the incoming URL pattern: /favicon.ico Enter the replacement pattern: /yourname.ico Save the document, and reload the HTTP configuration on the server. |
Don't overwrite favicon.ico if it already exists (05 Sep 2010)@Niel: The favicon.ico file is part of the Domino install. It isn't data. I never assumed that I could replace it with my own favicon.ico without risk of having it be overwritten by the Domino install, so I never faced this problem. Do you feel the same about the system ntf's? If you changed the design of the Domino Directory template, do you think the Domino install shouldn't replace it as well? If you want to use your own favicon.ico files, either give them other names, or put them in a subdirectory instead. That's one reason the substitution rule exists. |
Don't overwrite favicon.ico if it already exists (05 Sep 2010)Name the favicon file yourname.ico, and create a substitution rule, and the problem is solved. That way, you can have a separate icon for each site if you have more than one. You also don't have to worry about a new Domino install overwriting your icon. |
Allow editing image shared resources in designer (02 Aug 2010)For each job, there's an appropriate tool. Designer is not the appropriate tool for this job. It could possibly do to launch an image editor from Designer, but MSPaint isn't an image editor, so that's out of the question. |
Abort a 'quit' command (Tell quit stop) (14 May 2010)No, I don't want an "are you sure" prompt either, as that could be a big problem for possible batch runs. |
Go back to the Inbox after deleting a message (19 Mar 2010)"deletes it via the ESC key"? I assume you mean the Del key. I wholeheartedly agree. |
a new methode like notesDocument.AppendItemValue to add values to already existing items (18 Mar 2010)I completely agree with @1 here. Although the AppendItemValue method is illogical at best, it is still used, and needs to remain unchanged. |
Direct execution of server commands from program documents (18 Mar 2010)What would be better is to keep the current Program form, but disallow the creation of new documents from it. I'd propose to create a new Task form to replace it. With the Task document, you could specify any kind of task you want, including "route", "tell", "show" and "load". |
Make NTFs viewable in Web browser (16 Feb 2010)Considering the ACL permissions often used in an .ntf, it's potentially very dangerous to allow web access to it. The normal way is to develop an application using an .nsf, which, when it's ready, is copied over to an .ntf. I fail to see the problem with this handling. |
I wish there was an easy way to install applications on Domino or Notes client (20 Jan 2010)I have a hard time deciding if I want to promote or demote this idea, because I do believe that it should be simpler to create new applications on the server, but it still can't be user/developer controlled. The server admin needs to have the last word in anything that goes on the server, and provided that a solution for this would make sure that it's possible to lock it down, I will promote this idea. |
I wish there was an easy way to install applications on Domino or Notes client (20 Jan 2010)As a user, you should not be able to put a new application on the server, without the server admin approving it. As a developer, you should not be able to put a new application on a production server, without the server admin approving it. You should probably be able to put a new application on a development server, though. OpenNTF is a great source of applications for Domino, but that doesn't mean that any user should be able to put any application on a server. There would be total chaos following if that was allowed. |
On Windows platform, make database deletion a recycle bin affair (10 Jan 2010)No, if it was, then my steps 3 and 4 would be irrelevant. Step 5 would be Domino telling you that, instead of the Windows technician. Step 6 would still be the same, just one day earlier. Another problem would be that the recycle bin wouldn't be exclusive for Domino. It'd also used by the operating system. You, being the Domino admin, would most likely not be allowed to control it. The Windows technician responsible for the server would make sure of that. |
On Windows platform, make database deletion a recycle bin affair (10 Jan 2010)Scenario 2: 1. Database is deleted 2. Business user panics. Admin tries to get hold of the Windows technician that would be able to undo the delete. 3. The Windows technician is as usual too busy to be able to get to the restore immediately, because we all know how stable Windows is, so he has lots to do, so he gets back to the Domino admin the next day (best case scenario). 4. The Windows technician asks the Domino admin for the exact filename and location, and when it was deleted, because he has found no less than 23 files with that name, deleted on different dates, originating in different directories. 5. The Windows technician gets back to the Domino admin to tell him that he's sorry, but there's no such file. It was probably too big to be stored in the recycle bin. 6. The Domino admin goes to the backup engineer to have him restore the file from backup. Please note: All mentioned technicians could as well have been female. The words "he" and "him" should be read as "he or she" and "him or her". |
On Windows platform, make database deletion a recycle bin affair (10 Jan 2010)What this also mean is that you will make more work for admins, by making them delete things twice. First through the Domino server, and then through the Windows recycle bin. Also keep in mind that many Domino admins aren't admins of the server, which means that another person will have to go in and empty the recycle bin. The undo possibility is great for the ordinary user interfaces, but it gets in the way when doing admin stuff. |
On Windows platform, make database deletion a recycle bin affair (09 Jan 2010)Accidents will happen, but that's what backups are for. If someone keeps deleting databases "by accident" then maybe they shouldn't be Manager of databases, or administrators of Domino servers? |
@PhoneNumber (07 Jan 2010)OK, so Notes will need to know about all area codes, and ways of writing a phone number from all around the world, and all international prefix's. That's a database in itself, and it could be greater in size than the Notes client install. @4: What standard should be used to present a phone number? Does it always have to be in an international form? Maybe there's strictly national companies that doesn't want the international prefix? So the database will have to include information on how each country writes a phone number. As I said before, Sweden has area codes varying from 2 to 4 digits, and phone numbers varying from 5 to 8 digits. I'm tempted to change my promote to a demote, due to the impossibility of it, but I'll let it stand as it is for now. |
UNID is pronounced.... UHN-I.D. (Or not.) (09 Dec 2009)I think it's a perfect fit for IdeaJam, so we can vote on the "correct" pronounciation of the word. It's not a question, it's an opinion. |
UNID is pronounced.... YEW-NID (Or not.) (09 Dec 2009)I'll go with Art Thomas, and propose Un-I.D. |
Make Design Synopsis available from workspace - right mouse menu (21 Nov 2009)I have used Design Synopsis once or twice over the years, so I agree with Peter, that the right-click menu should be used for items I'm more likely to need as well. |
Rename Lotusscript Functions and variables and auto-update all references (29 Oct 2009)I may want to rename a function so I can test a temporary function with the same name, which wouldn't work with this functionality. The risk for so many unforeseen effects could be the result of this idea. Search/Replace usually works for me. |
@PhoneNumber (02 Sep 2009)Not to be negative, but I'm not sure it would work. For the US, it would certainly work, as it is a very standardized phone number system across the country. For Sweden, it's not very standardized. Sweden has area codes with 2 to 4 digits, and phone numbers with 5 to 8 digits. That's just one example, there are countless others. Nevertheless, I've promoted this idea. |
Make Peter good looking :-) (21 Jul 2009)Thanks Matt, it seems to work now! |
Make Peter good looking :-) (21 Jul 2009)Thanks Jan for suggesting this, and thanks Bruce for reacting on it so swiftly! It's been bugging me for a long time! :-) |
Admin Client for MAC OS X (20 Jul 2009)Personally, I'd rather see the admin and designer clients for linux. They are basically the only thing keeping me on Windows... |
LotusScript DB2 stored procedure call (15 Jun 2009)This is not a forum. You might try your question here: { Link } |
Add ability to have IMAP mail sync'd into a specified DB. (19 May 2009)And the same goes for POP3, of course. |
New number format column style property: index (31 Mar 2009)On the other hand, it is possible to work around this. In the above example: 3 hidden, sorted, numerical columns, and one unsorted text column. |
Pop-up comments box when Demote is clicked (26 Mar 2009)I believe it would be very good to have a comment on a demotion, and this would make it easier to remember commenting. It would be really bad, though, if it would be required to comment, to be able to demote an idea. |
Ability to disable alarms during busy hours (14 Mar 2009)You might want to move this to the Notes Client idea space. |
Fix the bug of @BrowserInfo (24 Feb 2009)@BrowserInfo can never be kept up-to-date with new browsers, so I think it is time to remove support for it instead. |
SSO between Lotus Notes Client and Domino HTTP Access (09 Jan 2009)There's a difference between the certificate used in Notes/Domino, and the certificate used by a web server. You would have to set up SSL for the Domino web server, and then request the web page as https, and it would work. |
Configure the applications to open an attachment (18 Dec 2008)The application used to open an attachment is the application registered for the file extension in the OS. If Open Office is registered in the OS to open .doc files, then Open Office is what will be used to open .doc files from Notes. You want to duplicate the Windows function "Open with..." in Notes. |
Lotus Notes Enterprise Activation (03 Nov 2008)There's a bit of a difference between a BB device and a PC or Mac. There are several 3rd party tools that handle software on client computers, without having to use Notes/Domino to handle "just" Notes. |
Voicemail controlled by out of office assistant (20 Oct 2008)This sounds like something that your voicemail software should have, not something a Domino server should be able to do. |
Default action when clicking an attachment (09 Oct 2008)I got the LotusUserGroup update newsletter on monday october 6, and it always has a Guru tips section. The tip from this newsletter was: ************************************************************** GURU TIPS - The following tip is provided by by Julian Robichaux of SNAPPS. Julian is the creator of nsftools.com, the author of Guru Guidance in Clippings (the newsletter for CLPs and CLIs), and a frequent presenter at key conferences in the Lotus space. Tip: Default File Attachments to Open Tired of always choosing whether to "Open" or "View" a file attachment in e-mail? The Lotus Notes 8.0.1 client has a new setting that lets you always "Open" an attachment when you double-click it, without getting the Open/View prompt. Just add this to your Notes.ini file: AttachmentActionDefault=1 And restart your Notes client. ************************************************************** I haven't tried this tip yet, but it looks promising... |
Foldering for workspace (07 Oct 2008)You currently have two options for "foldering": On the workspace, you can use different tabs to place your icons on. The user can name the tabs. In the Bookmarks bar, you can create your own folder structure to keep your bookmarks in. /Peter |
Keyboard short cut for pasting plain text (22 Sep 2008)I totally agree, the Paste special functionality exists, but takes so much time. Unfortunately, it's kind of a standard to not have a shortcut to it, so it probably won't happen... |
Allowing for Forward address field to be populated when registering users with a text file (05 Sep 2008)Lotus Notes and Domino is such a great product, because it can easily be enhanced in so many ways. There are several 3rd party products out there, that already implement other ways to register users. There are no secrets to how it is done, so you are also free to create your own application to do it. There is also the option to import the users from the text file you already have, and register them. Then you can run a fairly simple agent to go through the text file, and add the forwarding address to the person documents. It doesn't have to be a big problem. On the other hand, I don't want to demote this idea, since it would benefit us all to have a better function for user registration. I'll go with the "No opinion" option. |
Agent - Treat content as HTML (09 Jul 2008)I still think this would be a completely useless change, and I maintain my demotion. We already have full control over what gets sent to the browser. |
Agent - Treat content as HTML (08 Jul 2008)As Jeff said, if you print a content-type before printing anything else in the agent, Domino will not assume anything about your output, but will only send what you print to the browser. The & Chr(13) is not neccessary. |
Configure startup server connection (04 Jun 2008)This is already how Domino Administrator works, at least from version 6.5. In Administrator, open File/Preferences/Administration Preferences. The options for startup of Administrator are "Don't connect to any server", "Connect to last used server", and "Connect to specific server". /Peter |
Editing groups directly from the ACL (08 May 2008)It sounds more like you need to work on your internal routines instead. Managing application users should be automated, and access groups should have meaningful names. |
Make Ctrl-A a toggle (05 May 2008)In my opinion, this is a bad idea. Standard behavior for Ctrl-A is to select everything. To also use it to unselect everything would be confusing to users. What if you select everything in a view that has auto refresh on it. Suddenly you could have more documents in the view. What should Ctrl-A do then? Unselect everything, or select everything. I demote this idea. |
Leverage the Human experience of mail deletion patterns to fight spam (24 Jan 2008)I can's see this as a viable solution. It leaves SPAM-detection up to the user, and that is not a task suitable for a user. It also makes more work for the Admin, to go through and classify all the mail classed as SPAM by the user. If you're going to measure the time between message open and message delete, you will be getting lots of false positives. |
Database to record mail db usage (17 Dec 2007)This could give the wrong signal to an Admin, since you can be gone for quite some time due to illness, maternity leave, temporary assignments and so on. Imagine the problems you would create if you just deleted that poor user's mail file, with all the important saved mail in it. What if the mail file owner has delegated access? Someone would read and act on any incoming mail, but the owner might not touch the mail file. It would be better to check for mail files w/o an owner/persondoc, and delete those instead. You could also use the information in userlicenses to see which users _might_ be safe to delete. |
Allow Quickr (And Sametime) to use Internet Site Documents (12 Dec 2007)It is definately stupid, and the reason I'm not running ST at all... |
Adding a bookmark in the client = adding it in Designer (10 Dec 2007)I agree with Paul and Matt. What we really need is something completely different. |
