Lotusphere / Closing General Session: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters

Author: Thomas Duff
Tags: lotusphere2009 closing general session
Idea:

Alton Brown as our closing session speaker was pure brillance. It'll be hard to top for 2009, but I'd like to make the early pitch for Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters! I'm sure there are dozens of geek myths they could put to the test on stage (and even some that might not burn down the Dolphin!). I have no doubt that the attendees would love it.

Oh, and if we can get Kari Byron as part of the deal? Sweeeeet....

Author: Bill Malchisky
Comment: After Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson and Alton Brown...it is difficult to find a suitable third element in the set to complete the 'hat trick' of recent closing session entertainment, if you will. So, get to it. Could be a gem of a show! Great idea, Duffbert!
Lotusphere / Lodging: Run single busses to the outlying hotels after 9:30 pm.

Author: Thomas Duff
Tags: busses lodging hotels
Idea:

One of the reasons that using the "big 3" hotels is so important is that the busses stop running to the outlying hotels after some totally rediculous time like 9 pm. Most of the important "networking" is just getting started by then! :)

I would suggest that each conference hotel have one bus that runs every 30 minutes from the Dolphin to the other hotels (like CB, PO, ALS) starting at 9:30 pm and going until midnight. At most that's three extra busses on rotation, and it would make the cheaper hotels more attractive for lodging.

re: Run single busses to the outlying hotels after 9:30 pm.

Author: Leo L'Homme
Comment: I have never had an issue with this because of the fact that Disney transportation can get you to any of their resorts... Downtown Disney is a great option and the buses generally are not that crowded that late... unless you hit right at the time of a park closing... From downtown Disney you can take a bus back to any resort. They run very frequently, like every 10-15 minutes. Also, if you are staying at Port Orleans or Riverside, there is a bus that goes to one of the theme parks and you can take a boat back... a little more leisurely.

The only thing that I don't like about staying on property is the lack of transportation to escape and get off property. It gets annoying to buy $25.00, 750ml bottles of wine that basically, you can get the same brand as 1.5L for about 12.00 off property. I have to admit though, it is kind of funny to buy a bottle of wine on property and to have the cashier finish up the sale with "Have a magical evening!". I am always thinking to myself.... not with one bottle of wine I won't.
LS09 Best Practices Sessions / : Moving from Plumber to Painter

Author: Thomas Duff
Tags: lotusphere2009 ui
Idea:

As a developer, are you quite proud of your kewl coding skills (plumbing), while your users are more impressed with the visual appeal of the application (painting)? Many developers haven't made a good transition from plumber to painter. Travel with Tom as he shows how he's working through that transition himself, learning about such things as font selection, color selection, user interface design, and all those other things you'd really like to ignore (but the users keep demanding). The need and ability to create visually appealing applications is something that has long been lacking in the Notes community. We’ve all seen ugly Notes applications that look like they were developed back in the R3 days. This session will force a change in the mindset of developers, and lay the groundwork for changing the way they view their application development skills. This session was first given at ILUG 2008 and met with very high reviews.
