The same way I can mail to a group email address in Notes Mail ("Help Desk", for example), I should be able to IM a group. The business justification for this is that there are certain functions where it would be annoying if an IM didn't get answered immediately (e.g. Sales, Suicide Prevention Hotline, Help Desk).
 
Here is a specific mechanism for how this should work:
 
1. I send an IM to the group (e.g. "Please help me").
 
2. Everyone belonging to that group would get the same IM message popping up on his screen (i.e. "Please help me").
 
3. As soon as the first person in the group responds, it immediately becomes a simple individual chat, and the IM window is removed from the screens of the other members of the group.
 
This way there is no annoyance for group members that did not answer the IM, yet we can be sure that every IM addressed to the group gets answered promptly by someone.

Great idea (and keep the votes coming if you like it). We will actually be coming out with this very feature as part of the Lotus Sametime Advanced solution in the first half of 2008. (It will also allow you to do things like save the transcript of that "please help me" chat into a public FAQ that can be searched later, start up a group chat instead of a 1:1 chat, or conduct a voting poll amongst the members of that group, too) .

How do you prevent everyone from using a group or is this user created only is the question. Most enterprises block Announcements for this reason, so preventing the usage of these groups would be necessary
