When opening a truncated document, you can "retrive entire document" from the actions menu. If you have a replica of your mailfile on more than one server you will be presented with a list of servers. In case the server you selected is not available Notes prompts an error instead of failing over to a cluster member.
I suggest to try to failover to the next available cluster member instead of prompting the error.

I do not have any indication if this is a bug or not, there is no technote on this issue yet.
