If you install the SameTime Gateway then you need to install a DB2 server as well, only so it can store the logs in there. This is something that a Domino database could do as well, or not ?
It would be great if the storage place would be optional.

Domino outperforms DB/2 in many areas, but DB/2 also outperforms Domino in many areas. The sad thing however is that you get DB/2 for free if you are it with Domino, but the Domino to DB/2 interface is very slow, and could be made 1000 times faster with a simple hack.

DB2, although a great powerful product, presents itself as overkill here. Why do we need a Tier-1 RDBMS to store log files? It's like killing a mosquito with a steam roller for this task, IMHO.

WAS requires a relational dB - that is simple. But if this were to work with something else than DBw2 that woudl be great. SQL is (for better or for worse) more prevalent and Oracle woudl be great as well. The issue I often face is that if a shop does not already hav DB2 it might have to go through some review process to allow new technology in.
also, if you have Sametime GW you get DB2 for free and don't require Domino for it anyway.
