For action buttons and menu items, include a "Disable-when" formula that would work similar to the "Hide-when" formula for these controls. The difference being that the "Disable-when" formula would display a grayed-out, disabled control when the formula evaluates to true. In most cases, if you don't want a user to do something, you don't even show them the control (by using a hide-when formula, for example). However, there are cases when it makes sense to display a grayed-out, disabled control to let the user know that the control is available, but not currently enabled. The Lotus Notes and Domino Designer clients have these types of controls, so why don't they provide the ability for developers to design applications with them?

Why not make your own "gray" button to display (with no code or a prompt) and a hidewhen formula for the real button?

This would certainly fit with the way many Windows apps work (disabling action menus and items rather than hiding them when not available).

@1 - Yes there are always workarounds that you can include in your design to create *similar* behavior for the limitations in Domino Designer. However, why make it that complicated for the developer? I do use the technique that you described, but it still doesn't provide the exact UI behavior that truly *disabled* controls have in other client software (including the Lotus Notes, Domino Designer, and Domino Administrator client products). The "gray" buttons with no code still gain focus and fire events. Truly disabled controls do not.
