Inspired by Dreamweaver CS3 and Martin’s post, I would like to accomplish the same with Designer. That is, wouldn’t it be nice if the background color of a field (on a form designed for the Notes client) could be assigned/determined programmatically?

I would also add other aesthetic aspects of fields such as: borders (size, colour, etc), font (family, colour, size, etc), etc

You can already do this pretty easily.
See my blog: { Link }
But I still vote in favor, as I rather have this done using a 'computed-class', so CSS can format the whole thing, not just the background.

looks like ideajam included the ending dot in the link, so here's the link again:
{ Link }

Imagine though if there was a way to indicate that a field is mandatory with a tick in a checkbox in the properties dialog of the field and then have the choice of highlighting the field with different background colour when validation fails. That would be much simpler.

I'm voting yes, for the aim of the request, but I definitely agree more with Theo. A computed css class formula would be amazingly better, and not just for this, For example, negative numbers could automatically appear in red characters.
