I'd like to have a filter field at the top of views (similar to search box) that I can enter characters into and the view will filter in real time as characters are entered.

This would be nice as a general function always available to the user. However it as a developer it would be more important to have the option to set filters on views programatically. Suggested here: { Link }

A good way to provide View filtering to the user could be to implement the same type of modle used by Excel's Data Filter facility.
