We have had questions about exporting emails to a file format. The main concern is to export an email with an attachment and to export that into one file where it can be saved on the local computer or a shared drive. It can be exported into a Microsoft Office format or Lotus Symphony format.

I know this is possible in Outlook, but I've never understood why anyone would want to. Can you give a use case for it?

The Notes export filters should be improved anyway. You can export a view as 1-2-3 but not to open document format. You can export a document to "Microsoft RTF" !!! but not to open document format.

Our company has recently purchased an Exchange shop and have to listen to the complaints that they cannot extract a specific email that could be placed in to a document management system.

FYI, If anyone needs something like this now... You can print to PDF if you have Acrobat or another print to PDF tool.

Yes, we just went through this process for Legal, but they wanted much more than mail, also data from other databases. So I created a database with a configuration document and agent to export any database directly to XML. The Company that Legal hired to do the investigation loved this approach.

sometime users need the attachments as well, not only the email.
when a user leaving the company, they usually want to keep several of their personal emails with them, right now i will use imap to import the emails into another mail client.
export emails with attachments is a good idea.
