Agents should have the option to return a value to the calling sub/function.
The return value could be
  • a primitive
    Integer, String, ...
  • product object
    NotesDocument, NotesAgent , ...
  • custom class

This would be nice. Especially with agent.runonserver - having to use a status document to pass info back from the agent is cumbersome and imposes a performance penalty (deletion stubs).

Not to mention oddities with the noteid property of a document created and saved in the back-end (like it is empty the first time you access it?)

I'm afraid I have to disagree. I think the necessary overhead that would have to be added to both the client and server in order to provide some form of "container" model within which to hold the returned object would kill agent performance.

Maybe it would be the best if there would be a kind of a "virtual Notes document" where the "caller" can place some input parameters and the called agent can leave return values.
Sure, you could make this with "normal" Notes documents, but then
1. the caller needs author access in the database
2. you have to delete the temporary documents
3. you have deletion stubs

@3 - it would be a compromise. You could pass primitive values only that way.
Basically I see no need for going through the disk when there is plenty of memory to take advantage of. Maybe in the days of 640K (remember those days? it's been a while hasn't it?) the disk was a way to save on memory. But these days we should be using memory and preserving all the memory structures such as Notes objects and custom objects.
