The 'Permanent Pen' feature is really useful, for the 10% or less of users that ever manage to find/learn it.
I would like to see the following improvements:
a) a clear visual indicator (perhaps a different cursor?) when permanent pen is on
b) right-click menu option to turn OFF permanent pen when it's on
c) right-click menu option to turn ON permanent pen for those users who actually use it (e.g if it's been used in the current Notes session, for instance)

Good ideas. I use permanent pen a lot, e.g. to reply 'inline' to someones questions. Unfortunately I sometimes start typing forgetting to switch on my permanent pen.
So a way to 'convert' a part of the text to 'permanent-pen-style' would be a big time saver too.

in 14 years of using Notes - I have never got my head around this feature so any improvement to it would be good!

The permanent pen is so valuable, any improvement would be great, especially making it more obvious, I mean what does permanent pen mean when what you're really doing is adding your comments and making them stand out. So how about call it Add Comments or similar. I know so many people who highlight their text, make it bold and change the colour!!

Why not make it like in most document editors, where you have more control on the highlighting color. It might be nice to be able to modify this in the text properties.
