The template should have some modern UI for all kinds of elements and implement some generic, high quality solutions for field level trails, pushing changed values to other docs (even in other DBs), logging, validation, localization, help... and it should have proper object orientated, modularized and reusable code, which you can use and customize without loosing the ability to import future versions of the code. The result should be a template, on which you can base your own databases and lower the time build high level stuff. In my opinion such a code drop from IBM (if it is good, what I hope...) will help lots of persons and companies doing there own solutions and also help to avoid old style UI, which gives Notes such a bad reputation. It will also help with fixing all the annoyances, which are a problem to such solutions, if IBM has to develop such a template. I don't mind in which language and UI element (old style or xPages) this is done.

It is a nice idea, but I see many practical problems. The differences of applications are too large.

By the way, I have already developed a few versions of what you could call a generic template, indeed with a few standard scriptlibraries, with functions you always need.

Whenever I have to do something a second time I always keep in mind whether or not I could transform it into a template that is reusable.

When I use the word "template" I do not necessarily mean a termplate that can be used to upgrade your design. It looks more like a database form which you make a copy for your new application, and modify as needed.

It's a tough one. Many have tried including myself:

Agree with Rob, any framework is by definition an application and creates problems if people expect that it is useful as a basis for ALL types of applications. I think the commercial success story was IT Factory (remember that?) I think it collapsed under it's own weight. Another problem with frameworks is that they create a new discipline within a development platform. So therefore you can 'pigeon hole' yourself in, become accustomed to certain conventions and techniques, and your broader low-level skills suffer.

Kevin Pettit blogged about "Workflow.ntf" concept, and has his own SuperNTF template:
