When I'm registering a new server, I would like the ability to choose a baseline configuration for security/http/whatever settings. Basically a "use server doc from x server to populate security settings".

Perhaps there could be checkboxes to inherit the fields from each of the main tabs of the server you are using as a base. eg. a checkbox for Security, Ports, Tasks, Protocols, etc.

Perhaps a server registration policy just as we have user regstration policies.

Why stop with the basics? What about extending this to other server related items, like the option for Internet Sites, Messaging Configurations, Clustering, and so on?
4) Nathan T. Freeman2636 (21 Dec 2007)
It's a good idea, Chris, but why don't we just build it into a customized version of the directory? "Clone this server" as an option in the server doc?

I like the Server Registration option, then have a field on the Registration dialog box to "Use Registration Policy" with a list-box to select the appropriate one. There is risk, in that a botched setting here, that is caught later, could introduce a lot of re-work later...

So, maybe hybrid with @4's option too.

I've heard that one can copy, paste a server doc then rename it and move the public key... (for version 6, that did work well) , but it seems to not work so well in ND8--in that, there are a few more subtle fields than that to synchronize to ensure success.

@3 - server config docs take care of many items around messaging and other basics but moving more to the config docs and less in the server doc makes sense. Backwards compatibility would be an issue

Great idea.
